Global Drum Project

Saw the Global Drum Project last night featuring Mickey Hart and Zakir Hussain with Sikiru Adepoju and Giovanni Hidalgo. The solo performances were awesome as these guys are just amazing on their instruments. According to the program Zakir is the preeminent tabla player nad Indian musician of his generation. Amazing tabla player. There's more about Zakir at his record label site Moment Records.

Giovanni Hidalgo tore up the congas, bongos and timbales. He also played a very cool cajon solo at the end. The cajon had snares which I hadn't heard before. Sikiru Adepoju is a master of the talking drum -- also a very cool instrument that I haven't been exposed to very much. Check out the link I included; it has samples of his music. You can google all of these guys and find lots of stuff on the web about them.

...and you know Mickey Hart. There were twirlers in the seats behind us near the aisle.

This a Poem for You Today

now you can sing along
From "Live at the Jazz Gallery", Jason Lindner big band. vocals by Jay Collins
tune:
This is a Poem for You Today
how does everybody feel? are they scared like me of things they thought were free? well i don't know (i don'tknow) and I'll never know.

how does every one else deal? do they fail sometimes begin' a pardon for their crimes? well i don't know (i don't know) and I'll never know.

where is everyone runnin' to? sad subway stations, all the feet, all the destinations? and I don't know oh woh, but I believe I'll grow and know a little more tomorrow. said I believe I'll grow and know a little more tomorrow! but until then, this is poem for you today.

where does all the information go? to a computer some place and will it remember my face? well I don't know (i don't know) and I'll never know. where is everybody going to? do they go with lovers losin' their troubles in the covers
well I don't know (i don't know) and I'll never know.

where will what I call my soul go if the sea boils over and the sun goes out super nova. well I don't know oh oh, but I believe I'll grow and know a little more tomorrow. said I believe I'll grow and know a little more tomorrow oh yeah!
but until then, this is a poem for you today.

how does everyone feel when the day is sunny and all you can think of money? well I don't know (i don't know) and I'll never know. how does everyone else deal when noon comes creepin' and you're missin' out cause you're sleepin'
well I don't know (i don't know) and I'll never know.

how does everyone feel when the rent's going up and people are beggin with a cup. said I don't know but I believe I'll grow and know a little more tomorrow. yeah I believe I'll grow and know a little more tomorrow! woh yeah! but until then, this is a poem for you today. this is a poem, this is a poem for you today.

hay alright, got to blow my horn now.

Oceanos Obsession

I'm obsessing over the tune El Parrandero on David Binney and Ed Simmon's CD Oceanos. Starts with a slightly tilted 4 note (3 distinct) theme. Layer in funky traps and bongos interplay. Layer in a mechanistic, double-time guitar theme complemented a short time later with bass and then horns. Sax makes the statement. the horn section rises in a deep, rich pulse. Piano solos a latin cool collage. Pulse the horn section. Back to the machine and the sax statement flowing to a sax solo. End with horns all becoming independent moving parts in the kinetic, rainbow machine. wow, that's bad ...hope no one is reading this.
